Jesus, man, I joked about it this summer, but the new Wilmont head honchos really went above and beyond my wildest expectations: $1195 a month for a 2-bedroom??!
Did I not give them enough credit? Maybe talking up the “charm of the 1920s as seen in the stained glass petals adorning the entrance ways, the vintage crystal door knobs, and rod iron balconies” will get potential renters to ignore the surrounding neighborhood. Or MAYBE the “oiled bronze fixtures add[ing] vintage flair to the granite countertops and new cabinetry in the kitchen” will convince previous occupants to return. But that’s not all! “The bathroom includes ceramic tiled walls surrounding the tub and on the floor as well as a new tub, pedestal sink, and commode. New appliances including central air and heat have also been included for your pleasure.”
Fuck! I bet everyone who was evicted can’t WAIT to drop 90% of their monthly pay to continue living the dream with all the great new amenities…
As if the price gouging weren’t enough, the rental company thought it would be a fantastic idea to turn the capitalism knife by including some Wilmont testimonials, you know, to help sell you on the place…even if the quotes were lifted from those who fought to protect the apartments from its current fate. Take a look:
“The Wilmont has not only been an apartment complex in Raleigh for years, it’s become one of the many landmarks that we should do everything possible to hold onto. It has it’s own eclectic charm and I don’t want to lose the chance to live in such a unique place!”
- Kendra Miller“It is truly a fascinating place and the communal vibe is something you rarely see with other apartments.”
- Miles Holst“I didn’t even know gentrification could happen to white people!”
-RG
Okay, you got me. That last quote’s not on there.
Kendra Miller & Miles Holst should go after them for this if their names are being used to endorse a product that they were actually fighting against.
